How we work

The Sensory Team understands the importance of early identification and early intervention work in supporting children and young people with sensory needs.  We are committed to ensuring there is equity of access to Sensory Team involvement, and that children and young people can access the support they need using the National Eligibility Framework for Scoring Support Levels produced by the National Sensory impairment Partnership (NatSIP).

To enable the Sensory Team to support children and young people with their hearing, vision or multisensory needs we work closely with their families and Health partners.  The support, advice and information we provide is available once we have medical information of the child/young person’s hearing, vision or multi-sensory needs.

We use the most up-to-date medical information to ensure we are providing the most accurate information to support children and young people, their parents/carers and setting staff.

We provide advice, information and support for settings ensuring reasonable adjustments are made so children and young people can achieve their potential.

Who we work with

  • Children and young people aged 0 to 25 years old and their parents/carers
  • Parents/Carers in the home
  • Educational settings, including early years settings, schools and colleges
  • Other health, educational and care partner

Direct requests for involvement*

Requests for involvement from schools, settings and other professionals, for example, broader requests for involvement for the Sensory Team can be made but we will require Health information from Audiology and/or Eye Clinic as well as parent/carer consent prior to our involvement.

The Sensory Team will only become involved where involvement meets the National Eligibility Framework for Scoring Support Levels produced by NatSIP.

We would ask that if the request does not meet the criteria, schools/settings to consider utilising other SEND services.  Please contact the SEND support line for more information or support.

*Please note that requests will be considered once the Health information and parent/carer consent is available.

Training

To support setting staff with their work with children and young people with sensory needs, the Sensory Team will offer training sessions to develop an understanding of the pupil’s needs and the impact of the sensory impairment.

The Sensory Team support children and young people with hearing, vision and multi-sensory (deaf-blind) needs in Milton Keynes.

To build the capacity of setting staff the Sensory Team members provide a range of training opportunities to enable setting staff to feel confident when working with children and young people with sensory needs in their setting.

As sensory needs are a low incident, high complexity need, the Sensory Team provide targeted and personalised training to setting staff.  This would consider the sensory needs of the child/young person to support their access to learning and development.

Training may include:

  • Deaf Awareness in School/Setting

Involvement with children with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans

The Sensory Team have a statutory responsibility to contribute advice as part of the Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment process.

An assessment will involve the member of the Sensory Team speaking with the child or young person, their parent or carer and other professionals, such as teachers. They may also carry out observations of the child and young person in their educational/home context and use a range of assessment tools to build a clear picture of the child or young person’s needs.

When an EHC Plan has been agreed for a child/young person with sensory needs, a member of the Sensory Team will attend planning meeting to work with others to co-produce outcomes and provision.  We will also try and attend Annual Review meetings and update the EHC Plan as the child/young person’s needs change.
