Swinderby (Kisimul) School
Overview
Kisimul’s Swinderby School is an Independent Special School, and has provision for children and young people aged 8-19 years of age. We offer day placements for children with complex learning needs, who are typically autistic. Children are placed at the school because they require more individualised support, and our staff ratio and small group sizes (typically no more than 5) reflect that.
The school benefits from an integrated therapeutic team, with provision for Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Psychology. Supplementary therapies such as Music Therapy and Lego Therapy may form part of an individual timetable to support positive interactions.
Some children attending the school are also placed in the group children’s homes, which are nearby to the school. Shared support plans such as communication and sensory support strategies are utilised to encourage consistency across the waking day.
Curriculum
The school implements a semi-formal curriculum for learners with more complex learning profiles, with 5 key areas:
- Functional Skills
- Independent Living Skills
- Creativity
- Physical and mental well-being
- Culture and community.
Where learners are able to access more formal learning, such as synthetic phonics or history or Geography content, there is flexibility to support this within the curriculum. Accredited learning in functional skills or vocational related learning can be facilitated where appropriate.
The school benefits from access to a sports hall, swimming pool, sensory spaces, interactive learning rooms and outside spaces for leisure and play.
Age range: 8-19 years.

Admissions – School placements are funded by the local authority. The school will only assess young people where there is agreement with the local authority to do so. However, visits and parental /carer enquiries directly to the school are welcome.

Calman Coláiste (Kisimul) College
Overview
Calman Coláiste is registered as a Specialist Post 16 institution with the DFE. It has provision for neurodivergent students with complex learning needs. The college is located on the edge of a small village near Thorney, North of Peterborough. The college has a campus based provision with onsite vocational learning facilities and a main learning hub, where there are four discrete learning spaces, an open plan refectory and catering provision, sensory spaces, life skills provision and a library.
A team of tutors and learning support assistants support student engagement using personalised approaches and adapted curriculum support, such as signed speech support or symbolised instruction.
The college benefits from an integrated therapeutic team, with provision for Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Psychology. This team provide person centred plans and direct work and interventions with the students, as well as consultation and training for the core education team onsite.
Curriculum
The college curriculum is focussed on the provision of functional skills and independent living skills through access to a contextual and vocational based programme. This includes:
- Catering
- Creativity
- Animal husbandry, horticulture
- Environmental learning
- Work related learning
- Functional skills.
This is supplemented by accredited learning where appropriate, and students have the opportunity to access Duke of Edinburgh and outdoor learning, including leisure based activity to support confidence and independence such as horse riding and swimming.
